Curator’s statement
The San Diego area is amazing because it has everything! A Mediterranean climate year-round, beaches that range from mellow to wild, tacos that will make you never be able to eat a taco anywhere else again, and a vibe that balances laid-back with adventurous. You can surf in the morning, hike a canyon in the afternoon, and eat fresh seafood on a rooftop by sunset. And don’t even get me started on winter fun!

Things to do in San Diego

Torrey Pines Glider Port
Liberty Station
Once a Navy base—now a chill spot to eat, wander, and hang out. There’s a public market packed with over 30 food options, art studios, grassy lawns, and walking paths along the water. It’s low-key, spacious, and never feels too touristy—perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
See the Cabrillo National Monument
Probably my all-time favorite spot that almost everyone passes over! Run by the National Park Service, it boasts a panoramic view of San Diego on one side, and the vast Pacific on the other. There is a small museum, trails, and tide pools that will leave you feeling like you just visited another world!
Visit La Jolla
Children’s pool: Designed as a safe place for children to swim in the 1930s, it now is home to a multitude of sea lions that nap and play all day long!
Scripps Aquarium: More than just an aquarium, Scripps has an amazing selection of aquatic creatures coupled with amazing views, cool architecture, and tons of things to do nearby!
Torrey Pines Gliderport (right near La Jolla)
Dramatic cliffs, quiet hikes, and paragliders floating by like it’s nothing. And there is a cool cafe/bar/food spot right there where you can sit and watch everything!
Drive to the top of Mount Soledad at sunset
One of the most unique and awe-inspiring National Veterans Memorials in the nation. You can hike, bike, or drive to the top, where you will get views of the ocean on one side and the city on the other. I highly recommend visiting during golden hour to get the most amazing views of your life!
Mission & Pacific Beach Boardwalk
My favorite spot for people-watching—from surfers, rollerbladers, unique souls, free skaters, one-wheelers, and those embracing their best tank top attire. Make sure you look out for some of our local celebrities, like Slow-Mo!
Belmont Park (right at Mission Beach)
Be sure to stop by after walking the boardwalk! There is a roller-coaster, shopping, dining, great local souvenirs and food, an arcade, and even zip-lining and rock climbing! The true Cali experience!
Convoy Asian Cultural District
Once a business district, Convoy has since been transformed into THE spot for Asian food, culture, and shopping. From Korean BBQ to Izakaya to grocery stores with products straight from Japan, it has it all!
Outside the City: Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
You might think “desert: dry and boring,” but that’s where you’re wrong! Only a couple hours by car, the park has slot canyons, wildflower blooms in the spring, amazing views, off-roading and ATV spots, and free off-road camping. And if you have the time, be sure to go over night to see the stars!
Be sure to stop by Julian for their famous apple pies on the way!
Check out some of the natural hot springs, too!
Places to eat & drink in San Diego

Fig Tree Cafe (Liberty Station)
Casual and cozy, with a laid-back patio. Great for brunch and home to some of the best French toast you will ever have!
Menya Ultra (Convoy)
Still the best ramen in town—rich broth, perfectly chewy noodles, and no gimmicks.
Sushi Gaga (Downtown)
Hidden, intimate, and serious about sushi. Great for when you want the omakase experience without the fuss.
Hinotez Speakeasy (Convoy)
Underground, moody, and well-made drinks. A solid secret spot with personality.
Ko-Li Bar (Convoy)
Japanese-style kakigōri, a shaved ice dessert with ice imported straight from Japan. Slightly sweet and refreshing, with fresh fruits and plenty of options to choose from!
Asa Bakery (Downtown)
Small, Japanese-style bakery with the freshest melon pan, anpan, and matcha treats. A total gem.
Bird Rock Coffee Roasters
Clean, smooth roasts—great for black coffee drinkers. Bonus points for the laid-back, beachy vibe.
Cliffhanger Cafe
One of the best views while you eat—and you don’t even have to hike for it! Chill food, ocean breeze, and gliders soaring past!
Birrieria & Taqueria La Huasteca (Pacific Beach)
Even if you THINK you’ve had birrieria before, you haven’t until you’ve had it from here! And it’s only steps away from the beach.
Oscar’s Tacos (Pacific Beach)
Quick, no-frills, and local. Make sure to stop by for happy hour tacos from 2–5 pm Monday through Thursday!
