Curator’s statement
South Beach is a lively part of Miami that is known for its world-famous beaches, luxury oceanfront hotels, fine dining, celebrity sightings, Art Deco style, and lively nightlife. It might not be a top destination that comes to mind when traveling with teens, but it is truly a perfect place for a family with teens! I spent a long weekend in South Beach with my daughter when she was 15, and we had an amazing time. This guide will provide insider tips on what to do and what not to do with teens in South Beach.

Things to do in South Beach

Getting around
South Beach is the southernmost part of Miami and is a barrier island that is about 2.5 square miles. It is a walkable area, but the best way to experience it is by bike, especially along the beachfront trail. You can also take the free trolley.
Things to do
Ocean Drive: Check out the Art Deco architecture, see Versace’s Mediterranean mansion, and enjoy the stunning beaches! Teens will love trying to spot a celebrity, too.
Lincoln Road: This one-mile pedestrian mall features over 200 boutique shops and dining options and is one of the most popular shopping destinations in South Beach. You will find international brands here. The architecture of Lincoln Road is notable, as well, and the green spaces make it a great place to relax and people-watch!
Collins Avenue: Collins Avenue runs parallel to the Atlantic Ocean, just one block west. It is famous for its shopping, hotels, dining, and bars. If you continue north on Collins Avenue, you will find Miami Beach (check out the boardwalk) and the cities of Surfside and Sunny Isles. Located from 17th to 21st Streets is Billionaire’s Row, and from 44th to 59th Streets is Millionaire’s Row.
South Pointe Park and Pier: This is the farthest south you can get on Miami Beach. The park offers stunning panoramic views of the South Beach shoreline, Port of Miami, the Miami skyline, and Fisher Island. You’ll also find picnic areas, benches, fishing spots, and a café. Insider tip: It is a great spot to watch the sunset.
Española Way: This tree-lined pedestrian street dates back to the 1920s and was created as a “historic Spanish village,” known for dancing in the streets. Here, you will find people doing yoga during the day and salsa dancing at night. Española Way has some fantastic restaurants and some of the best people-watching in South Beach! Insider tip: Española Way has a calendar of events that are open to the public!
Art Deco Museum and Welcome Center: This is a must if you and your teen want to learn more about the architecture and culture of the area!
Miami Beach and South Beach: Most teens love the beach, so a stop at one of these beaches (or both) is a must! Both beaches attract visitors from all over the world because of their pristine white sand. Miami Beach is more laid-back and family-friendly, while South Beach is more vibrant and is the home of nighttime beach parties. Depending on the age of your teens, you may want to avoid South Beach later in the night.
Places to eat & drink in South Beach

Joe’s Stone Crab: This is an excellent seafood restaurant on Washington Avenue in Miami Beach. It is a little pricey but worth it!
Sola Miami Beach: Located on Collins Avenue, this is one of South Beach’s iconic restaurants that features live shows in true Miami style.
Lola’s Surf Cantina: If you are looking for casual dining with great indoor and outdoor seating, Lola’s is your spot. It’s on Ocean Drive, so outdoor seating is a great option if you like to people-watch!
Hosteria Romana: This was my favorite place! It is an authentic Italian restaurant on Española Way. The rustic decor, traditional music, and authentic menu make you feel like you’ve stepped into Rome. Insider tip: Sitting on the cobblestone patio under the twinkling lights of Española Way is perfect, but be sure to step inside to see the Italian charm.
Macchialina: If you are looking for fine dining, Macchialina on Alton Road is recommended. This rustic trattoria is an upscale Italian spot worth visiting. Insider tip: Reservations are required.
Need to know
Day trip and tour options
Little Havana: Just a short drive from South Beach, Little Havana is a Cuban neighborhood that features authentic restaurants and cafés, art galleries, cigar shops, and the famous Domino Park, where locals play dominoes. Insider tip: Take a food tour to sample all the Cuban flavors and to learn the history of this great neighborhood.
Wynwood Walls: Walk through the Wynwood neighborhood to see the many murals painted by local artists. It’s a perfect spot for some Instagram photo ops for your teen!
Dolphin Mall: Dolphin Mall is Miami’s largest outlet mall that has over 240 international and designer brand discounted shops. It is one of the most popular malls in Miami.
Everglades Tour: Take half a day and head to Everglades National Park, where you can embark on an airboat safari!
Miami’s millionaire sightseeing cruise: There is no better way to see the millionaire homes on the Venetian Islands than on a boat! Plus, the cruise departs near Bayside Marketplace, another great place to shop or to ride a gondola with leather seats and a glass-bottom floor on Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel!
