Chapel Hill: A Little Town with a Big Personality (and Yes, I’m Biased)

Curator’s statement
Here’s the thing: I live here. But even if I didn’t I’d still say Chapel Hill is one of the most lovable small towns in America. Not in a “look at all our award-winning parks” kind of way. More like a “you will accidentally spend three hours wandering around and not regret a minute of it” kind of way. It’s a college town, yes. But it’s also a tree-lined storybook, a soft place to land, a little funky around the edges, and full of locals who really care about their coffee. Or their BLTs. Or both. This is not a comprehensive guide. This is a curated collection of places and moments that make me fall in love with this town over and over again—as someone who lives here, drives by the same spots a hundred times, and still finds new reasons to stop.

Things to do in Chapel Hill

Fridays on the Front Porch at The Carolina Inn
Live music and a casually magical vibe. It is the best kind of community gathering with friendly faces and a relaxed energy.
Carrboro Farmers Market
Saturday mornings here are full of handmade goods, fresh flowers, and unexpected treasures. Go for the produce and stay for the people-watching.
Karaoke night at Lumina Theater
An unapologetically fun night out. Whether you sing or just watch, the energy is joyful, awkward in the best way, and oddly heartwarming.
Concerts on the lawn in Southern Village
Bring a blanket, let the kids run around, and enjoy live music as the sun goes down. It feels like the kind of summer evening you wish you could relive.
Coker Arboretum walks
A peaceful retreat right in the heart of town. Shady paths, blooming trees, and quiet moments make it perfect for a morning stroll or a midday reset.
UNC game day
The town comes alive with energy and pride. Whether you are heading to the stadium or just soaking in the buzz on Franklin Street, the spirit is contagious.
Places to eat & drink in Chapel Hill

Brunch, bites & bowls
Here are my gluten-free favorites. My go-to list includes:
Coco for their matcha lattes and the vegan chicken pesto panini that somehow makes you feel healthy and indulgent at the same time.
Luna for South American comfort food and delicious cocktails or mocktails that just hit.
Grata Café for the gluten-free waffles that feel like a special occasion even on a random Tuesday.
Bar Taco for the duck taco—my personal favorite. It’s tender, flavorful, and exactly how I like it.
Purple Bowl for smoothie bowls that make you feel like you’ve accomplished something before noon.
Roots Natural Kitchen because sometimes a grain bowl just solves everything.
There’s also Al’s Burger Shack with gluten-free buns that hold up beautifully, and Glasshalfull in Carrboro for a date night that deserves an entire bottle of wine.
And, of course, Merritt’s Grill. That BLT is not overrated. It is the kind of sandwich that will make you forgive the long line and consider ordering a second one for the ride home.
Need to know
Chapel Hill is a walking town, especially around the Carolina Inn and UNC campus, so bring comfortable shoes. If you’re visiting in spring or fall, expect gorgeous weather and lots of local events, so plan ahead and make reservations early. Parking can be tricky near Franklin Street, but there are plenty of public lots if you know where to look. Locals are friendly, and you’ll probably leave with at least one conversation you didn’t expect to have. Oh, and Carolina Blue is more than just a color here—it's practically a way of life.
