Curator’s statement

Tucked along the stunning coastline of Maine, Bar Harbor is a quintessential New England escape. With its dramatic ocean views, charming downtown, and access to the breathtaking Acadia National Park, this town is a favorite for foodies, outdoor enthusiasts, and travelers seeking both relaxation and exploration. Whether you’re here for the fresh-off-the-boat lobster rolls, scenic hikes with ocean vistas, or browsing local shops on Main Street, Bar Harbor offers a perfect balance of adventure and leisure. We recently went for our babymoon, so it holds a special place in my heart. In this guide, I’ve rounded up my top recommendations for where to eat, hike, and shop—so you can make the most of your time in this beautiful coastal gem.

Things to do in Maine

Sand Beach - Acadia National Park

A visit to Acadia National Park is a must, with its scenic drives, wooded trails, and sweeping ocean views. For a more relaxed afternoon, I love bringing a picnic to Agamont Park and watching the boats in the harbor. If you’re up for time on the water, Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. offers a variety of boat tours, from whale watching to puffin cruises, while the LuLu Lobster Boat provides a fun and educational experience about Maine’s lobster industry. Sand Beach is another favorite—perfect for a quick dip or a scenic stop along the Park Loop Road. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also great ways to take in the coastline. For the early risers, catch the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain, either by hiking up or driving to the summit for breathtaking views.

There is also a great mix of locally owned shops that make browsing downtown a highlight of any trip. One of my favorite spots is The Beehive General Store, a charming gift shop with locally made goods and Bar Harbor keepsakes. For pet lovers, Bark Harbor is a must—it’s full of treats, toys, and gear for your furry friend. I also love stopping into Bramble and Stone, a beautifully curated boutique with clothing, home goods, and unique finds. The Acadia Shop is a go-to for park-themed apparel and souvenirs, while Sherman’s Book Shop is perfect for grabbing a beach read or local guidebook. And Cool as a Moose is always a fun stop for quirky gifts, clothing, and Maine-themed goodies.

Some of my hiking recommendations:

  • North and South Bubble Rock: five-mile out and back, moderate

  • Ocean Path Trail: four-mile out-and-back, easy

  • Beehive Trail: 1.5 mile loop, hard

  • Great Head Trail: 1.8 mile loop, moderate

  • Jordan Pond Path - 3.3 mile loop, easy

  • Cadillac Mountain- 4.2 mile out-and-back, moderate

Places to eat & drink in Maine

Buttery lobster rolls at The Travelin' Lobster

Bar Harbor and nearby Southwest Harbor are full of amazing food and drink spots. In Bar Harbor, my go-to for a lobster roll is Bar Harbor Lobster Pound, while Levi’s favorite is The Travelin Lobster—both are must-tries. Jordan Pond House Restaurant is a classic spot for lunch, especially before or after a walk around the scenic Jordan Pond Path. Abel’s Lobster offers a beautiful waterfront setting, and Peekytoe Provisions serves a delicious seafood chowder you won’t want to miss. For a sweet treat, Ben & Bill’s Chocolate Emporium is a local favorite with incredible ice cream, candy, and fudge. Our fav is their salted caramel coffee flavor. In Southwest Harbor, Beal’s Lobster Pier is a casual waterfront gem for fresh lobster, and Clark Point Cafe is my favorite breakfast spot. Harbor Table serves up great sandwiches. Little Notch Bakery & Cafe is perfect for pastries and sammies, and the Salt Shop is a fun stop for ice cream!

Need to know

The closest airports to visiting this area are the Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) and Bangor International Airport (BGR), with more options available at BGR. I would also recommend renting a car.
